Frost mitigation flares

Frost mitigation flares
  • The frost occurs during the spring and autumn, usually in calm nights when clouds are absent.  It can cause total destruction of crops, especially to perennial fruits. The damage to fruit trees may range from loss of the crop for one year to loss of the tree or orchard.
  • The main heat losses through radiation are in the atmosphere transparency window 8-12 μm. We are using pyrotechnical flares “Loza-600” to create a smoke screen, which absorbs and re-emits the infrared radiation back to the ground.
  • Based on theoretical studies, we obtained optimal values:
    • 10-20 m heights of smoke screen, depending on the synoptic situation;
    • 1-10 m thickness of the aerosol layer;
    • 1-2 μm aerosol sizes;
    • 1010-1011 m-3 concentration of aerosols.
  • An additional effect due to burning of pyrotechnics is a slight but crucial local increase in temperature – approximately 1.5-2 degrees.
  • The periodic creation of such curtains covers the protection zone with a greenhouse layer of smoke.
The density of the smoke layer is continuously monitored, as well as atmospheric parameters (temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed and direction).
